How to Converting WAV or MP3 files to MIDI

Basically, it takes so much time and work to transfer a WAV or MP3 to MIDI, that its not worth the effort. Most people will probably just tell you its not possible, because its easier than explaining how difficult it is.

Why is it so difficult? First you need to understand the difference between WAVs and MP3s, and MIDIs. WAVs and MP3s are fairly straight forward. They are simply digital recordings of the music. However MIDI is quite different. A MIDI file is more like a piece of sheet music for the MIDI device. All of the sounds you hear are actually stored in the MIDI device as samples. The MIDI file simply tells the MIDI device when to play certain sounds, so that it sounds like music. It is analogous to a player piano. The MIDI device is the piano, while the MIDI file is the piano roll, that controls what the player piano plays.

So to convert a WAV or MP3 to MIDI is not as easy as re-recording it in a different format. The process is very much like listening to a piece of music, and then writing down what you heard as sheet music. Except of course, its all done by computer. Yet it is still quite difficult to do. There is no one program that can simply convert a WAV directly to MIDI in one step. It requires a lot of user input, as well as tweaking to the final MIDI.

However, if you really want to give it a shot, this can get you started. You are going to need special software to do it. Here is a list of programs that might help you in your quest:

http://www.akoff.com/music-composer.html

http://www.musebook.com/?page=mbwav2midi for monophonic wavs only.

http://www.scoreextractor.com

http://www.digital-ear.com/digital-ear/index.html monophonics only.

Now a lot of these programs are not free. Also they are quite difficult to master, so don’t expect anyone in these forums to hold your hand and walk you through it. If you need help using a specific piece of software, try reading the manual, the support forums for that particular program, or the MIDI groups in Usenet. Good luck!

If anyone would like to comment on a particular program, or perhaps knows of one that I have failed to mention, feel free to add it to the thread.
